57 years ago this April in 1955, Latin American icon Roberto Clemente made his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The renowned right fielder is considered one of the greatest baseball players in the annals of the sport. Clemente had enormous skills on the diamond, but he is equally recalled for his achievements and bravery off the field. According to The Baseball Page website, Clemente managed to become a national hero and baseball great despite a partially damaged spinal column he suffered in a serious car accident during his rookie season. Clemente's popularity was so immense that citizens urged him to run for mayor of San Juan , Puerto Rico .
